Dog painting – The art of dog portraits
Capturing an individual dogs character in a bright, modern and colourful dog painting is an extremely rewarding activity. I have been painting pictures for over 25 years. Originally focused on human portraiture, more recently I have been producing commissions of pets, mainly dog paintings, but some cats and horses. I really enjoy painting dogs, embracing the challenges posed by each individual breed. Capturing the muscular nature of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier can require very different techniques and processes to those needed to artistically describe the curly hair and floppy ears of a Cocker Spaniel.
Dog painting – Getting the right image
My ambition with each dog painting is to capture the very essence of each animal. I ask that you send me several photos of your pet. One can form the basis of the portrait whist the others can show me the character of the animal. Even if they are not the best photos, it is really important to see the dog in different settings and doing different things to understand their own little character traits. This will inform the finished dog painting.
Dog painting – The right materials
Using the right materials is key. I use acrylic paint, not oils. Over time I have developed a love for acrylics and mastered their use. They are incredibly flexible for the style I paint, and are ideal to create modern, bold and colourful paintings. I use professional acrylic paints and mediums from Golden and Liquidex. These are top level paints that will last several lifetimes! I can either paint onto canvas board or stretched canvas depending on size and finish required.
